北京时间3月24日晚，国际奥委会通过官网发文证实，日本首相安倍晋三已与国际奥委会主席巴赫达成一致，最晚在2021年举办东京奥运会。

北京时间24日晚7时左右，日本首相安倍晋三与国际奥委会主席巴赫进行电话会议，围绕东京奥运会及残奥会，提及考虑到参赛选手的准备时间等问题，正式提议东京奥运会推迟一年举办。对此，巴赫主席100%同意。

在随后举行的新闻发布会上，安倍晋三表示，日方提议考虑推迟（东京奥运会）大约一年，以使运动员能在最佳状态下比赛，同时让观众更安心、更安全地观赛。

国际奥委会在文中称，国际奥委会和日本双方高层都认为，在当前全球范围内新冠肺炎疫情加速蔓延的困境中，东京奥运会能成为世界的希望灯塔，奥运圣火能成为当前世界所处的隧道尽头的曙光。因此，双方同意奥运圣火将留在日本。双方还同意，本届赛事的名称依旧为“东京2020年奥运会和残奥会”。

另据了解，国际奥委会执委会随后将召开紧急执委会会议，讨论延期举办东京奥运会事宜。
